C.R. 'Taunton Brake' Coach Kit

The 4 brake composites built in 1908/9 to Diagram 95B were unique in having the first class lavatory sited between the First and Third Class compartments instead of between the First Class and the van which was standard on the other 65' corridor composites. These coaches were used on through Glasgow-Taunton workings and a photograph of one with a destination board lettered 'Glasgow Central & Bristol via Severn Tunnel' appears in O.S. Nock's book 'The Caledonian Railway'. It is the leading coach in the 10am Glasgow to Euston train in the photograph.

These coaches were all dual fitted and featured the later full elliptical roof. The last was withdrawn in 1955.

Non-corridor 'Slip' Coach Kit

Six coaches were built to Diagram 103, four in 1906 and two in 1908 for use as slip coaches being variously slipped at Couper Angus (for Blairgowrie), Grahamston (for Grangemouth), Gleneagles (for St. Fillans), Carluke (for Lanark) and Cleghorn (again for Lanark) according to the July 1914 edition of the Main Line Carriage Workings book. In between slip duties they were used on some quite mundane duties even being regularly rostered on the Kilsyth branch.

These coaches were Westinghouse braked only when new and featured the later full elliptical roof. The last was withdrawn in 1953.

Caledonian Railway Coat of Arms

"Wha dare meddle wi' me" - a loose translation of the Scottish motto (nemo me impune lacessit, litterly meaning "no-one provokes me with impunity") which was appropriated along with the Scottish coat of arms (without any sanction from the Lord Lyon, King of Arms) by the Caledonian Railway Co.
